
Roll forming productivity is the rate of acceptable profiles delivered to the next process, not simply the speed displayed on the HMI. A line can run quickly and still lose capacity through coil changes, tool setup, micro-stops, scrap or blocked run-out handling.
OEE—availability, performance and quality—provides a useful structure when each loss is measured consistently. The objective is not to chase one percentage but to identify the constraint that prevents stable output.
Measure availability
Record planned production time and every stop with a clear reason code. Separate coil change, tooling change, material shortage, mechanical failure, electrical fault and downstream blockage. Accurate categories make it possible to remove recurring losses instead of debating general impressions.
Measure real performance
Compare actual running speed with the validated standard for that profile. Include short stops and reduced-speed operation. A stable 50 m/min process may deliver more good product than an unstable 70 m/min setting that creates frequent resets or rejects.
Measure quality loss
Count startup scrap, adjustment scrap and rejected finished profiles. Link defects to coil batch, recipe, operator and time. Dimensions, twist, surface marks, hole position and cut length are common categories. First-piece approval prevents long runs of nonconforming product.
Convert downtime into money
Downtime cost can include lost contribution, paid labor, idle energy, missed delivery and overtime needed to recover. For a constrained line, the cost of one stopped hour may be much higher than the maintenance part that caused it. Use the calculation to prioritize preventive actions and critical spares.
